Our Story

Cinderella Russian Bakery has a fairy tale name, there is nothing make believe about this authentic Russian bakery and cafe that has been satisfying piroshki cravings since 1953.

When Mike Fishman landed in the city in 1988 from the Soviet Union, it wasn’t long before Mike seized the opportunity to take over the the business from two Russian women who ran the bakery before. They trained, passed on recipes and knowledge. In 2008 Mike and his wife became sole owners and changed the look from dated diner to a cozy place. Mike expanded the kitchen and added outdoor tables and a parklet.

Mike made some adjustments to the menu focusing on high-quality local ingredients and everything is made from scratch daily.

Russians and San Franciscans value diversity and experiencing cultures through food. Mike’s dark and chewy rye bread offers that feeling of nostalgia.

Our foods are prepared from time-honored recipes handed down through generations: Piroshki, pelmeni (Siberian meat-filled dumplings), pastries, Russian breads and entrees like borscht and chicken kiev. We are one of the only places in the Bay Area serving homemade kvas—a fermented grain drink with a distinctive, tangy, sour flavor.

You can find many of our baked goods at specialty delicatessens and food stores from San Jose to Sacramento. Just look for our Cinderella label. Click here for a complete listing of our retail partners, where you’ll find our fresh bakery products delivered daily.

The goal is for Cinderella Bakery and Café to stay in this location for many years to come and to keep the recipes authentic. Maybe one day the third generation of Fishman’s will continue the business.
